[ENG] Dutch Mechanisms
Power, conflict and myth making, seem to be universal factors in our historiography. History is often about those who won, lost, made mistakes or did great things. The most well-known story about the history of Alkmaar is that of the rebellious townspeople, boiling tar and retreating Spaniards on October 8th 1573: the Victory began at Alkmaar!
We no longer know who walked the streets of Alkmaar during ‘Ontzet’ (the relief/victory) 450 years ago. The experiences of most inhabitants have been lost and forgotten. The Grote Kerk (big church), which witnessed all events that took place on October 8th, still adorns the heart of the city. It has seen it all, but it can’t speak to tell its tale.
An inspiring thought to artist Folkert de Jong. Which stories remain and which disappear from history? How is history formed? And what story about Alkmaar Ontzet will we be telling each other in the future? In the exhibition ‘Dutch Mechanisms’, De Jong examines the mechanisms that determine our history. The events of Alkmaar Ontzet form the starting point for his journey.
Folkert de Jong builds futuristic installations inspired by the past, present and future. Using atypical materials, the scenes seem to rise above history. By standing face to face with alienating scenes in which historical visual elements no longer offer anything to hold onto, De Jong asks visitors to wander through his installations, to question history and think about frequently recurring themes in our historiography.
‘Dutch Mechanisms’ is the third exhibition in the series Nieuw Licht – Kunst in de Grote Kerk Alkmaar (New Light – Art in the Big Church Alkmaar). Every summer, an artist is invited and challenged to create a work inspired by, or reflecting on, the heritage of the church and the city. Born in Alkmaar and raised in Egmond aan Zee, Folkert de Jong is the third artist to participate.
