In haar nieuwe serie werken stelt Lisa Konno de absurditeit en tegenstrijdigheid van schoonheidsidealen aan de kaak. Ze bevraagt de grens tussen mode als een bevrijdende vorm van zelfexpressie en vorm van onderdrukking. Het nieuwe werk maakte Konno speciaal voor haar eerste museale solotentoonstelling in Museum JAN te Amstelveen.

In The Porcelain Body combineert Konno archetypische vrouwbeelden uit de Nederlandse en de Japanse cultuur. Ze speelt met clichématige rollen door gebruik te maken van symbolen die we relateren aan vrouwelijke onderdrukking, zoals het schort en de netpanty. Deze kledingstukken worden door Konno getransformeerd tot ze hun functie verliezen. De nieuwe serie werken, die het midden houden tussen kledingstuk en sculptuur, laten zien hoe onze ideeën over schoonheid onderhevig zijn aan tijd en cultuur. Konno combineert in dit werk voor het eerst textiel en porselein, naar aanleiding van een werkperiode in Arita (Japan). Als iemand van zowel Nederlandse als Japanse afkomst was deze periode tevens een persoonlijke zoektocht.

Lisa Konno (1992) is een uitgesproken interdisciplinaire maker. In haar praktijk is modevormgeving altijd een onderdeel, maar niet per se het uitgangspunt. Culturele identiteit, engagement en ambacht zijn belangrijke pijlers in haar oeuvre. Konno onderzoekt hoe objecten het verhaal van een leven kunnen dragen en behandelt gewichtige onderwerpen graag op een lichtvoetige, humoristische manier.

De tentoonstelling ‘The Porcelain Body’ is van 14 februari tot en met 16 juni 2024 te zien bij Museum JAN. Ik werkte hieraan mee als curator en schreef onder meer de teksten voor de tentoonstelling.

In her newest work, Lisa Konno, exposes the absurdity and contradictions in ideals of beauty. She questions the borders between fashion as a liberating form of self-expression, and, as a form of oppression. All the work presented here are created especially for Konno’s first solo museum exhibition, at Museum JAN.

The Porcelain Body combines archetypical images of women out of the Dutch and Japanese cultures. Konno plays with the clichéd roles using symbols that we relate to female oppression, such as aprons and net stockings. Konno transforms these garments until their recognizable functions vanish. For example, fish net stockings are stripped of their sexual connotation by weaving closed the holes. In a video-installation and a series of objects that are somewhere between garments and sculpture, she demonstrates how our ideas about beauty are subject to time and culture. Konno combines, for the first time in her work, both textile and porcelain, stimulated by her residency in Arita (Japan). As someone with both Dutch and Japanese roots this period doubled as a personal quest.

Lisa Konno (1992) is an outspoken interdisciplinary artist. In her practice, fashion design is always a part, but not necessarily the departure point. Cultural identity, social engagement and craft are core elements in her oeuvre. Konno investigates how objects can carry the story of a life and she tackles weighty topics in a light-hearted, humorous way.
